Introduction! Vivian Kuang

Hi everyone and welcome to 23rd!

My name is Vivian Kuang (she/her) and I’ll be one of your vice chairs at BMUN 71. I’m a junior majoring in Political Economy and Data Science with a concentration in Race and the Law, and I'm originally from here in the Bay Area.

My academic and professional interests center on inequality, more specifically incarceration and policing, immigration, and Asian American and ethnic studies. Recently, I've become more interested in learning about ethnic studies research epistemology (the production of knowledge, and resisting traditional power structures that disempower the research perspectives of people of color and other marginalized people), as well as social movements and community organizing! I generally focus on the US in my work, but I think it's really informative and important to examine global history as well, which this committee has definitely helped me with! My hope is that this committee will be a learning experience for you as well and help you think critically about how decisions were made in the international order during the 23rd General Assembly, which was such an important time in modern world history.

This is my 3rd year in BMUN and I'm also the Under-Secretary General of External Relations this year, which means you or your advisor have probably received a lot emails from me in the past few months. Outside of BMUN, I am the Executive Editor of the Asian American Research Journal here at Berkeley, which is the first and only academic research journal devoted to Asian American issues. I am also an Undergraduate Student Instructor for the introductory data science course here at Berkeley, and compete as an ice dancer on the Cal Figure Skating team! In my free time, you'll probably find me reading, doing jigsaw puzzles, and listening to and making music of all kinds :-)

Hi everyone! My name's Michael Miller and I'll be one of your vice chairs for 23rd this spring. I'm a junior majoring in applied mathematics at UC Berkeley with intentions of pursuing a career in software engineering and data science. Vice Chair Introduction: Eric Pan

 Hi everyone! My name is Eric Pan and I will be one of your vice chairs for the 23rd committee for BMUN LXXI.  I’m currently a 2nd-year majoring in History and Political Science. I’ve been fascinated by history and politics since I was a child after a lot of exposure to documentaries and visits to various museums, and I am really happy I’m able to continue my pursuit of my passion here at Berkeley.  I’ve been involved with MUN for all four years of high school, although I’ve never been to BMUN as a delegate and used to attend SMUNC instead. (I know, treacherous) I’m glad to now however, stand (or I more accurately guess sit) on the other end of the committee, and help continue this great tradition of facilitating political discourse! Topic B Discussion: Refugees and the Vietnam War

  Hi delegates! I hope your preparation for BMUN 71 is going well! This post will focus on further discussion of Topic B: T he Vietnam War. One aspect of the topic that would be very interesting to look into is the refugee crisis that followed the Vietnam War, which this article from History provides a basic overview of. From the fall of Saigon in 1975 until 1995, more than 3 million people fled as refugees from Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, escaping violence and persecution. They mostly sought refuge in other nations in the region as well as the United States, in which there is a sizable population of Southeast Asian refugees and their descendants today. The human toll of this crisis is immeasurable. It is estimated that between 25,000 to 50,000 refugees died while attempting to leave by sea, as they were often trapped on boats for days without food or water.
